So there's a cafe across the street from me that has a free / open hotspot. I can get the signal if I hold the laptop up to the front window, but nowhere else in the house. Is there any device I can put in my window that will extend / repeat the signal to allow me to connect with my computer elsewhere inside?

Yes, purchas a wireless repeater or an access point that can be used in repeater mode and place it in the window yo get the signal at. you will have to setup the repeater, but the quick install instrunctions that come with it should help. May i suggest you recon the cafe and find out the maker of the router they use and buy the same maker repeater i.e linksys, dlink, netgear etc........
