Whats wrong with Liberals?

How do you think Women got to have the same rights as men? Why do you think blacks and whites have the same rights? It is becuase of us Liberals that we can have these rights, we faught for our belifes and won. Now you tell me what is wrong with that huh??

lincoln was a republican. the liberals did not fight for blacks or women, most southerners were democrats at that time like algores father who voted against those acts.

furthermore, thats hardly what liberals stand for now. they stand for special rights for gays, women, or any other group they think has the right to get special treatment.

I amsickened by all the hate-filled tirades here. People spewing out the same old Straw Man image of Liberals and Liberalism. How cna someone's thinking be so aberrant as to actually believe that Liberals hate America and are trying to destroy it? Hey, people: The Founding Fathers were Liberals! A conservative resists change, is suspicious of the new and different, and sticks with the tried and true. Well, in 1776 the tried and true was monarchy. There was NO example of a constitutional Democracy to point to. Or a secular government. We got both!

In 1861 the tried and true was slavery-- why, we've always had slavery! It's the natural condition of man! It would be experimentation to give the slaves freedom! LIBERALS were willing to try.

Can anyone be so stupid to think that the people who were Republicans in 1860 would recognize the Party today, and would not recoil in disgust and join the Democrats? Back then it was an idealistic reform party. Liberal! Then after the war it was taken over by Robber Barons. In 1980 it was taken over by Fundamentalists. It is not the Party of Lincoln anymore!

While I disagree with the way your question/statement was phrased, I disagree with most of the answers even more! I have never read quite as much narrow-minded, "infantile" garbage about liberals--well, at least not since the election.

First of all, I have a problem with any so-called conservative thinkers telling anyone what I, a liberal-thinking American, "stand" for!! None of them know me, so they cannot speak for me.

A liberal is someone who doesn't get stuck in the status-quo rut, someone who is not afraid to try new things, to try to find new solutions for old problems, and someone who doesn't mind if the Federal Government has a little more control over certain things. All Democrats are NOT liberals. All liberals are NOT Democrats. Unfortunately there is not a Liberal Party in this country!

Liberals have done many things to better this country--and certainly do not HATE the US; most of us want to make it better for ALL of its citizens, to make it the land that it was touted to be!

Also, what is "liberal thought" during one decade may be "conservative" by the next decade. It is an ever-changing thing!

And please, again, don't try to speak for me! (For instance: I am an anti-abortion feminist!! [Go figure, eh?])

Before blasting away at liberals, most of you need to do a little homework.

So, to answer your original question: there is NOTHING wrong with liberals. For that matter, there is nothing wrong with conservatives. Just different ways of looking at problems and solutions.

Lincoln was a Republican. Most of those supporting slavery were Dems. The civil rights legislation of the 60's was supported by a bipartisan coalition (I'm giving my age away there).
I somehow have trouble believing that YOU fought these battles. Slaves were freed in the 1860's. Women have been voting for more than 85 years. The big civil rights battles were in the 60's. Do you expect anyone to believe that you were politically active for any of these?

If they were freed, they would get paid and shop, providing more for themselves then masters would.

Ending Slavery also a good think-You know treating other as we would like to be treated.

Lincoln was for the Union if that ment slavery yea and if it ment abolition yea also. He was a republican and wanted to preserve the satus quo-that is to say "Union". Not very liberal

Now comes the time for me to ask what is good about liberalism?
Is Abortion good?-No Liberalism promotes infantacide.
Is Affermative Action good? No it creats unequal laws which divid breathern in opposing factions.
Is a doctor helping his patiant kill him or herself good? No its utterly evil.
Is a weak military good? no its bad it makes us weak and undefendable.
Are high taxes good? No we should let those who do the work keep and dispose of "their money" according to their will that is
right. 10% is an outragus amount to pay in taxes we pay far more than twice that.

Conservitives belive in socialism but the distribution network is not the state but the family.

Should you force me to pay for a public school that teach my child to be a humanist and bases my convictions Hybriss's of all outrages.

Charlton Heston was heavily involved in the civil rights movement of the late 50s/early 60s -- well before Hollywood considered such things fashionable. And he's as CONSERVATIVE as they come.

No offense, but what's wrong with liberals is that many of them profess to have a monolopy on things like equality for women and ethnic minorities. They don't.

liberals/Democrats don't believe in giving people autonomy. Liberals/Democrats believe in government telling people what to do as in the government schools. It is Bush and Republicans that wanted to give people school choice with private school vouchers but Democrats/liberals would not have that. Bush and Republicans wanted to let people OWN their social security retirement account. Liberals/Dems and the liberal media stopped Bush. liberals think that individuals are too stupid to handle their own retirement accounts and want government to have the power to do that and just about everything else from redistributing wealth to "protecting" the environment you name it. . this increasing empowerment of government by liberals/Democrats will result in turning the U.S. into the U.S.S.R. , Cuba or N Korea with all the poverty, no freedom and misery. the "liberals" on that other answer by cynthiawee were "classical liberals" who are really conservatives today. Democrats/liberals of today are just socialists or Marxists and always have been since FDR gave us SSI ,medicare and the New Deal which is socialism.
