Definently get one from Direct TV.
I did because i knew that since i was a Direct TV customer, there was a chance I may get a good bargain (I got one basically for free after a $100 mail in rebate).

Plus, the box is made specifically for Direct TV customers unlike other products, so it makes watching Direct TV easier than others and it is easier to work, access, and set up.

Trust me, Direct TV DVR rocks!

PS
DVR is usually $100 if ur a Direct TV customer.

Whether you purchase the DirectTV DVR from DirecTV or retail, you'll have to call it in to DirecTV customer service for activation. The ones at the store work the same as the one you can buy from DirecTV. And I don't think the prices are all that much different.

If you're talking about a 3rd party DVR (e.g., TiVO), completely separate issue, won't be as integrated into your DirecTV receiver.
