He said we could sort through the trash for toys after the trash collected and dumped from the truck and before it goes to the dump or the garbage burner. Would people volunteer?

NO, and even if someone did volunteer, what would you do with the toys?
Let the neighbor do that if she wants to but YOU should consider the health issues of digging thru peoples garbage. If you got into my trash, I doubt you would be posting THIS question. My trash is just that, TRASH! I am thinking about the rotten meat left in my trash for a week (forgot to take the can out trash day so it sat in there for 11 days). The smelly chicken/turkey guts from Xmas dinner...I could go on but you get the idea. I want to gag just thinking about it.

Assuming that you have a cast iron stomach, by the time you find a suitable toy to 'fix' you could have bought several toys from a yard sale or salvation army. The money that you would spend in bleach to clean these toys could be used to purchase better? ones from goodwill.

I say HELL no to this idea. Think of your kids! Imagine how they will feel when you are spotted in the dumpster by one of his or her friends. Not to likely they will believe the 'toy rescue' story...........Sure as an adult you might not care what others think but as a child, it would hurt like hell to be teased because your mother was constantly 'retrieving' things from the garbage. Pass on this one
P.s. If you live in a small town, your husband's ex would love it if you said yes to this idea!

I have to agree with the above poster in that it would be unsanitary to go through the trash and the best idea would be to put up flyers, but disagree when it comes to asking the people to drop off toys...most of the time the reason they toss them instead of donating them to a charity drop box is it is not convenient for them. We have had two people on my street put out a clean box of toys and put up a "free sign" for neighborhood kids because they were older and it was toys their grandkids had outgrown and it was just too physically difficult for them to transport the items to donate them elsewhere.

It would be best if he offered a service to not only have a drop-off location, but an offer pick up unwanted toys. People would volunteer for this if there was a strong, well-organized person leading the group.

Unsanitary. Tell your friend to put up some flyers asking people to drop off unwanted toys at a safe location like a church, on a certain date after getting permission from the church of course.
