The "turn off hard disks" setting under the power control applet will doo just that, park the heads (the things that read the sinfo in the spinning disk) and power down the disk in order to save power. The processor is still on and more importantly to your iPod, the USB ports are powered. Make sure the power setting that you choose does not "suspend" or "hibernate" after a period of time. Good Luck!

"turn off hard disks" mean cutting down to power supply to your harddisk and stop the motor in it from spinning. The computer will be sleeping while this function on. iPod will still be charge cuz there are still power from USB port.

Yes, your computer is still on when this is activated. All it means is that your hard drive spins down to save power when your system is idle. This is helpful to preserve a hard drive's lifespan or to save battery life in a laptop.

At the same time, you don't need to set this to a low time limit (unless this is a laptop running on battery power). Causing the hard drive to spin all the way down then back up often causes more wear than it saves. A good setting is for it to kick in after the system has been idle for 3 or 4 hours.

Yes it will - since the power is generated from the motherboard and not the hard drive. The hard drive turning off is so that it is not constantly spinning.
