The paraolympics are very much like the Olympics in that the races and contests are highly challenging. Most of the individuals who participate as paraolympians have a physical disability that does not inhibit them from participating fully in events that would be challenging even for a person who does not have a disability. The special olympics have events that are geared down for individuals who have cognitive difficulties, retardation. The contests are geared towards individuals who for instance could have Downs syndrome. Most of the time a person with Down's syndrome would not have the physical and/or mental capability to participate in paraolympic events because they would be too challenging to create equal competition with the other competitors. I'm not totally sure what the guidelines are for these events but this has been my observation from talking with different people.

Special Olympics are for persons with intellectual disabilities- they are the people you went to school with who went to the special education classes.

Paralympics are for persons who have physical handicaps. They are able to perform Olympic events with the use of a prosthetic or wheel chair, or they may have a disability like blindness or deafness.

Both are very exciting to watch.
