My aunt is mad. Her 16 year old daughter who is a junior in high school went on a field trip to a theatre with her class and came back an hour after school got out. Her daughter called her for a ride home but nobody answered. Her male teacher who is about 35 said he'd drive her home if she couldn't find a ride. She lives like 10 minutes away fron the school (driving distance). So he drove her home. Now her mom (my aunt) is angry. She said she should have waited at school and under no circumstances should he have driven her home alone.
Is my aunt overreacting? He only drove her home.

telemark- in any situation- is it wrong for a teacher to drive a student home alone? It just happened that in this case it was a male teacher.

I agree with you all- I think it was safer for her teacher to drive her home than to be left at school.

I think that in this case your aunt is overreacting. Right now she doesn't have any reason to believe that the teacher did anything more that drive his student home rather than let her wait alone at school. Our society has become so paranoid about everything and everyone it's a wonder we go out of the house anymore.

It was probably not the best idea. But, neither was leaving the girl alone at school. Your question doesn't list enough info about the circumstances - however, If I were the teacher, I probably would have notified the office & asked if a secretary or female teacher could have taken her home. I would also have left a message on the home voice mail (if any), letting them know the time & what was happening.
What we're really talking about here is natural, protective insticts and an appearance of impropriety that most likely has little validity. It would be best if everyone calmed down, your Aunt needs to come up with a solution so something like this doesn't happen again and the teacher should contact his supervisors to find out if he actually did anything wrong.

She sure is overreacting. Its a pretty sad day when a teacher can't help a student by doing nothing more than giving the student a ride home. Regardless of the sex of either one! The teacher is not at fault here. If you aunt is that upset she should advise her daughter not to accept rides from teachers even if the sky has fallen in.

It is no more wrong than a female teacher driving home a male student. Sure, there are bad people and bad teachers who would try something, but comparitive risk tells me it's safer for a teacher to drive home a student than the student being left alone without knowing a ride is at least on its way.

If the student knew or trusted the teacher enough to let him drive her home, it seems like it is okay. She probably would not have accepted a ride if she didn't trust him at all. She got home and was not put in danger or in any bad situation, so what is the problem anyways?

As a male teacher, I would not have driven her home. These days there is a risk that the student could accuse the teacher of impropriety, in which case ha would lose his job (and any chance of getting another as a teacher) and have the stigma of the accusation for the rest of his life, even if he is innocent

Overreaction and by the way she is not a little kid - she's 16 years old and a junior in high school. Also he's her teacher which means if anything happened they would know where to find him and he would get into trouble. People are really paranoid.

In this day and age, there is cause for concern. The teacher may have been 'just being nice' or he could have had another motive in mind.
Most teens have cell phones now. She should have called
home and asked her mom or someone else in the family
to pick her up. If this teacher is really into this student, he
now knows where she lives.

Well, technically teachers are not supposed to drive students home unless some sort of official deal is made with the school and the student's parents.
I think your aunt is just being careful. You can't be too careful these days.

the teacher may have driven her home but he should have avoided any appearance of unacceptable behavior by finding another mom to take the girl home or a female teacher or to offer to wait at the school until she could contact her mom for a ride
