I don't get it, Islam, it seems to be, is the only religion where violence flourishes within the religion. Does this have to do with how Islam came about, through turbulent times, which included civil unrest, was that the only way they could get control of the people, through violence?

I am asking this question not out of ignorance, but out of what the media and countless authors have stated, even muslim scholars. I am not saying that I agree or disagree with this point, just that it is so prevelant, and wanted feedback from people. It is not meant to offend anyone.

Well, take a look at the Quran:

"Allah is the enemy of the unbelievers." - Sura 2:98

"Kill them [unbelievers] wherever you find them. Fight with them until there is no persecution, and religion should be only for Allah." - Sura 2:191- 193

"Fighting is enjoined on you, and it is an object of dislike to you; and it may be that you dislike a thing while it is good for you, and it may be that you love a thing while it is evil for you, and Allah knows, while you do not know." - Sura 2:216

"Surely the true religion with Allah is Islam and whoever disbelieves in the communications of Allah then surely Allah is quick in reckoning." - Sura 3:19

"Be not weak in pursuit of the enemy." - Sura 4:104

"If they reject your judgment, know that it is Allah's wish to scourge them for their sins." - Sura 5:49

"O you who believe (Muslims)! Do not take the Jews and the Christians for friends; they are friends of each other; and whosoever among you takes them for a friend, then surely shall become one of their number; surely Allah does not guide (those Jewish and Christian) people." - Sura 5:51

"I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off every fingertip of them." - Sura 8:12

Misconceptions due to media
The common misconceptions about Islam arise in the minds of a majority of
non-Muslims, because they are constantly being bombarded with
misinformation about Islam. International media is mainly controlled by the
western world, whether it is international satellite channels, radio stations, news
papers, magazines or books. Recently the Internet has become a powerful
medium of information. Though it is not controlled by anybody, one finds a large
amount of virulent propaganda about Islam on the Internet. Of course, Muslims
too are utilizing this tool to portray the right image of Islam and Muslims, but
they are far behind as compared to the propaganda against Islam. I hope the
efforts by the Muslims will increase and continue to be pursued.

Islam means peace.
Islam comes from the root word ‘salaam’, which means peace. It also means
submitting one’s will to Allah (swt). Thus Islam is a religion of peace, which is
acquired by submitting one’s will to the will of the Supreme Creator, Allah (swt).

Its not Islam which advocates violence but instead it is the religion which advocates Peace. Remember one think they are 1-2 Billion Muslims in the world and out of that only few are doing wrongful actions besides the Muslim population in USA is more then most of the Middle Eastern countries and FYI Middle Eastern countries population is not the number one or two or three or.... in Muslim population. Its Media which is brain washing the innocent people. I encourage all of you to learn the Holy Quran before believing things blindly. The reason why there is so much violence and violations of humans rights from Islam is because of its holy book the Quran:

47:4, Therefore, when ye meet the Unbelievers (in fight), smite at their necks......

5:33, The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and His Messenger, and strive with might and main for mischief through the land is: execution, or crucifixion, or the cutting off of hands and feet from opposite sides......

5:38 Cut off the hands of thieves, whether they are male or female.....

5:51: O ye who believe! Take not the Christians nor the Jews for friends......

Your question should have been "Does Islam advocate violence?"

I say this because you are obviously ignorant of the origins of Islam (or any of the Abrahamic religions for that matter)

The first Muslims were EXTREMELY peaceful. They were tortured and brutally murdered in public for their belief in one God. They never raised a hand in self defense until Revelations permitted.

The Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition were both Christian endeavors aimed at MUSLIMS, so slow your (ignorant) role lil buddy.

Mohammad advocated his religion over a period of 22 years.
During those years he saw himself rising from Jesus-like peaceful preacher to a head of huge state.
When Mohammad was a humble preacher in Markka, there were no logic of him preaching violence against his enemies, specially he wasn't sure whom those enemy to be are. That is why all his Koranic phrases "inspired" in Makka were peaceful.

Jesus said he is the continuation of Judaism, equally, Mohammad said he is the predessessor of both Christianity and Judaism.
So, he had to acknowledgeed their faith.

As his power grew, he started to have enemies and most of all, Jews whom lived around Madena (his state capital city), Mohammad needed to fight and kill his enemies.
His followers didn't accept to fight those whom he acknowledged earlier as monotheists to his same god.

So, he came up with the 2 most dangerous phrases in the Koran: Altawba-29 and Altawba-5.
The 1st phrase orders the killing of Jews, Christians and other monotheists whom doesn't worship his (Alla) exclusively while the 2nd orders the killing of Atheists.

After his death and the expansion of the Islamic empire, many Islamic movements found it difficult to comply with these 2 phrases (orders) of the Koran and tried in many ways annulling it, the most acknowledgable trial was that of an Islamic sect called AL MUTAZALAH.

AL MUTAZALAH concluded that the Koran wasn't actually the words of god, but god's Revelations (Inspirations) that Mohammad might have misinterpreted.
Hardliners won over most of such movements and now we have Al Qaeda advocates the same sermonize Mohammad preached 1400 years ago.
