Im taking my mom to San Diego for her birthday in late march. What are some fun things to do there? Im 20 she is turning 40, we arent really into zoo's or anything, but Im not sure what there is to do there.

Im thinking maybe a cruise around the ocean or something?

Is there any good shopping places and resturants around?

Thanks in advance

Go into downtown. There they have one of the finest outdoor shopping centers in Horton Plaza. Also, several blocks away you can take a harbor cruise around the San Diego Bay.

Don't forget to enjoy what I consider one of the finest clam chowder soups around at Anthony's Fish Grotto. It will be located next to where the harbor cruises take off.

Seaport Village is another place to go for good shopping and restaurants. http://www.seaportvillage.com/restaurants/index.php

Also there are some good places in Coronado (an island located across downtown San Diego -- which can be accessed by ferry or the Coronado Bridge).

La Jolla is known for some good upscale shopping centers.

One tip -- Stay in the REAL part of San Diego (south of La Jolla) and not what they consider North County. North County begins where the I-5 and I-805 merge and there is nothing but traffic and homes there. Also, there is nothing east of I-15, unless you are into gaming at one of the Indian Casino's they have.

There are three cruise excursion companies that I recommend. They offer a variety of cruises and amenities.

Bahia Belle
Address: 998 W. Mission Bay Drive, San Diego, CA 92109
Telephone: (858) 539-7720
The Bahia cruises the sparkling clear waters of Mission Bay. This replica of a 19th century Mississippi riverboat has rich oak interiors and an oak dance. There are 3 decks to explore with a built in bar on one deck. There’s live music for dancing. The Bahia Belle makes stops at Bahia and Catamaran Resorts throughout the evening. You may disembark, spend some time at one of these resorts, and then return later. The cruise is free for hotel guests and the cost was only $6.00 per person for nonguests the last time I checked. Call or visit their website for a cruise schedule or to make reservations.

Hornblower Cruises
Address: 2825 5th Avenue, San Diego, CA 92103
Telephone: (619) 686-8715
Hornblower is well known for their dinner and holiday cruises and has other locations in California. The ships are beautiful with excellent service. They also offer whale watching and champagne brunch cruises. Enjoy the scenery, star gaze from the outside decks, and dance to live music. Hornblower cruises San Diego Bay.

San Diego Harbor Excursion
Address: 1050 N. Harbor Drive, San Diego, CA 92101
Telephone: (619) 234-4111 or (800) 442-7847
This is a local family owned business that cruises San Diego Bay. The offer dinner and brunch cruises, private charters, and whale watching cruises as well as ferry services to and from Coronado Island. The ships are beautiful with great service. Enjoy entertainment, cocktails, and a memorable San Diego cruise experience.

"Harbor Cruises" located in the downtown area of San Diego is a great time and a great meal. The food is excellent and the view is something to remember. Open bar is also an added perk.
It is located at the end of Harbor drive. I higly recommended this to you, I went to a x-mas party there and was very impressed.
The cruise takes you around the bay for about three hours.

Another place is called the "Shout House" also located in the downtown San Diego area on 5th ave. This is an interactive resturant and bar-the crowd participates.

I had been to San Diego for 2 months earlier this year and I have 2 years older than your mother.

I had bought 2 maps of San Diego before my trip from the Bay Area. However, both are incomplete. I bought a 3rd one which is more complete but needs a magnifying lens to be able to read it. The reason? I only appreciated the whole of San Diego after riding the trolleys!
There are bus stations in most trolley station. Be sure to park your car in a secured area. My friends car was just parked at Ralphs in National City and glasses were broken when he returned.

I would suggest that you bring her to Sea World and San Diego Zoo. It is like that you havent been to San Diego is you didnt visit these 2 places. It is like visiting Disneyland in Anaheim.

The Balboa Park is also one of the loveliest parks. See its website so that you know where you want to go.

Dont forget the Coronado bridge! it is one of the tallest in the world and it gives a spectacular view of the place! Did you know that it won an award because of its spectacular view ? See also Hotel del Coronado which is one of the most beautiful not only in USA but also in the world. Dont also miss the Harbor Area. My cousin checked in at Mariott Hotel and they got a magnificent view from their room.

Go to the last American exit in San Ysidro. There is an outlet there. It is the best shopping center in San Diego.

Restaurants? I am a Filipino American and we usually eat Pinoy foods. I just dont know what you want.

Visit yahoo travel, click travel then San Diego. There are the top 10 popular attractions and their websites. There is a little Italian village somewhere ! See also the pictures as slideshow.

The zoo stinks. Going to San Diego zoo is a waste of money. I prefer the USS Midway located in the San Diego Bay.

Go to Torrey Pines State Reserve. Has some of the best views in San Diego. It's on Camino Del Mar (PCH) south of carmel valley road. Downtown La Jolla also has good dining and shops if you're into that. The rest of Balboa Park also has good museums.

There will be lots of whale watching cruises running at that time of year. Dinner cruises around Mission Bay operate year round. If you like Mexican, Fred's on Garrnet street in Pacific Beach can't be beat. Walking the PB boardwalk and looking at the shops there is always something fun. If you have money, head down to Seaport Village for shopping and Old Port for dinner.

The Scripps Oceanographic Institute and The San Diego Zoo are a good start! If you or someone you know belong to AAA, you can get Tour Books that have details on what to see and do, where to stay and eat, and with maps.

I would recommend a trip into Old Town, just to the east of the airport. I think it's a nice area for some sightseeing and souvenir shopping and there are a lot of great restaurants in the area.

I would also recommend crossing the bridge into Coronado. There are a lot of great restaurants on the island, as well as the famous landmark Hotel Del Coronado.
