Depends on what line you are in. Let's say you are a programmer... you can take the time to learn more about other programming languages or come up with some cool new programme... since you've got the internet, you can surf for the latest news and updates of issues concering your field

one might play games all day as a car salesman on e-bay
job-duties:
post listings
take photos/post
customer service
closing deal
alot of down time once duties are done, then you are paid to sit till auction is over and report hourly to boss. The rest of the time is yours to do what you want on computer.
So one guy plays around and answer questions on yahoo, and have a great time for 50min and then checks auction for 5 min, then reports to boss.Good job!
Second guy does the same job but in his down time spends time looking up discription of different cars and finds out about manufacturer defects ,when cars where made, finds out book value, plus compares prices, finds out everything that pertains to make the buisness better. The boss might not want your help,But the boss will see your drive to become the best car salesman, and will know your well educated about cars and knows in return, you will help answer questions about cars, to the customers.
Boss:promoteing 1 salesman to head marketing team
now position open for salesman and your gonna promote 1 of 2 and hire 1 new.
you make the decision your the boss which would you hire out of two?
Do your best, at what ever you do and it will pay in time, and never give up!

What I used to do in that situation was:
1) Some research about what I was (or would) working on that could help me to improve my projects.
2) Resolve some IQ tests and things like that, as a way of 'exercising' my brain.
3)Talk to my friends, as a way of relaxing and taking short breaks.
My bosses usually were up to all of that.

If you don't have much of a work load, just enjoy the time you have to do whatever you want to do. Only you can answer the question of what you should do at any given moment. Make use of your free time in whatever way that fulfills you.

I dont know it is not good to go on the internet while at work for fun unless otherwise instructed, but I would just ask if anyone need help they can call me, or just read a book.

Find on-line book sites and read literature for free. Use your time to write. Use the internet to plan your next career/life step. Post resumes.
There's a lot you can use your time to do.

Take a class and study when you have no work to do. The more education you have, the better pay you will get. Make use of that time you have. Use it wisely.

I think I know where you work. Enjoy it. You're well-paid and have time to do what you want. You should explore your options as hobbies or ways to improve your health and lifestyle or how to save money for retirement.
