Gerald Ford was a great successor as President for protecting US from crumbling due to leadership problem. However, he was much criticized for pardoning Nixon that led to his no re-election. Thereby, he was the only US President who was never elected to said office.

Gerald Ford was one of the most decent, honorable men in politics at the time he was president. He said he never had any ambitions to become president. He wanted to be Speaker of the House. He didn't have a hateful bone in his body regardless of what one person wrote. They obviously didn't know who he was or what he stood for. (Maybe they meant Nixon?) He was the last truly bipartisan president we had in the White House. I voted for Jimmy Carter in '76 because Ford pardoned Tricky Dick Nixon, but he was a good man, he was modest, and his character was flawless. He once said, "I'm a Ford, not a Lincoln." That meant he thought of himself as not that special of a person or president. Incidentally, Carter ended up being one of his best friends after both left politics. That should say something about what kind of man he was. He was also an orphan (was adopted), and an All-American football player from the University of Michigan.

I think RichA above said it best. One thing to remember though, Ford was the MOST athletic President since Teddy Roosevelt..so he stumbled once or twice, he was hardly a klutz. There! Getting that off of my chest, I felt sorry for Jerry Ford. He didn't want to be Vice President, and was appointed. He didn't want to be President and seceded after Nixon resigned.(And for the record, Nixon's resignation was the 2nd time Nixon "fell on the sword" to keep from dividing America..the first time was the 1960 Presidential election where there was extreme voter fraud found in Illinois,Texas. and West Virginia. His supporters begged him to contest the election results but he said the thing to do was concede and give full support to the next President John Kennedy...Al Gore could have learned a lesson from history) Ford presided over our Bicentennial as a President that didn't want to be and one not elected. He did a good job, though. Even if the congress screwed him when North Vietnam launched a full scale invasion of the South in direct violation of the Paris Peace Accords. He begged Congress to let him help the South, but Congress cut off aid entirely and the South fell to the Communists with tragic results. RIP Jerry.

I always think the same thing about him - he pardoned Nixon. Later generations have lauded this decision as "healing", but I still disagree with it. In fact, it could be that the failure to pursue prosecuting Nixon for his crimes may be contributory to the slow usurpation of power by the executive branch that has been going on for some time and has been accelerated by the current president. Presidents who break the law should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

It is 1976.

I am living in San Diego and he is to make a stop down there for the campaign. I go to see him, along with most of San Diego, at a nearby mall.

He arrives, starts to walk up to the podium, trips and crashes into the podium. Maybe Chevy Chase WAS right
