My friends (we are all straight) and I were having a discussion about gays and lesbians and no one could answer my question...Why do butch lesbian women want to be like men if they want to be with a woman? Conversely, Why do gay men act like women? I just don't get it...if you are gay, why is there this male/female thing? I am just asking to get a further understanding.

First off, you've got to realize that feminine men don't want to be women, and butch women don't want to be men. They aren't acting like the other sex, they are acting like themselves. How you dress, style, talk, think, and behave are all highly individualized characteristics, and masculine women and feminine men are the way they are. Some people may do so because they think that that is being gay- but such is a stereotype, perpetuated by the media. Some people act the part because they like the aesthetics of whatever they have- there are butch/femme lesbians who like the dynamic of masculinity with femininity, there are butch/butch lesbians who like masculine energies no unlike that between gay men, femme/femme lesbians and gay men who prefer that aesthetic. It has to do with gender, because sexually, they like the set of genitals that matches their own. But the combination of those genitals and that body with one's style, behavior, dress, speech, and all that- can vary tremendously.

Hope that made sense!

I believe a lot of gay people just follow what they see in the mainstream media. Imagine if you were growing up, knew you were different, but had no one to talk to about it. Well you hide it, and by hiding that you were always one step outside of everyone else. Always too scared to get close or have a normal friendship/relationship because someone could find out.
What to they do? They just grab on the easiest 'role model' they see. Mainly, butch women and feminine gay men on television. I know there are some people who have grown up their whole lives that way, but the majority do it to fit in. I wish people would realize being gay/lesbian/bisexual only affects your intimate relationships; not your whole life.
Unfortunately this stereotype is being propagated all the time by gay people and the media. People just need to stop and think for a minute. And if people think they're in the wrong body, then there's surgical solutions to that. Trust me, it's a lot easier to be yourself than try to act like someone else.

I don't know but I do know that it is rather annoying when the 'butch' women expect every butch-looking lesbian to act just like them. It's also really aggrivating when a woman does everything she can to avoid looking feminine and then gets pissy when someone mistakingly calls her 'sir'.

I am a feminine gay guy and I resent it when people say that I choose to be feminine. I have acted girly every since I was young and its not because I try to act girly its just part of my personality. Im androgynous (I was raised baking cookies with my mom but also doing automechanics with my father). Theres nothing wrong with being feminine or butch. Its just the persons personality.

I'm a girly-girl lesbo, but maybe they feel like they're a man trapped in a woman's body or vice versa. Maybe they've had bad experiences with men and don't want men to be attracted to them. Maybe they think they look better in mens clothes (they ARE more loose fitting, and comfy!) Maybe they want people to look at them and go, "I think she's gay!" My girlfriend wears boxers. I've never asked why. I know she kinda wants a penis tho...lol :)

I think that it's a gender-bender misconception.
Maybe they want to be men instead of women.
