I think that the epidural was the best thing ever invented.... Here's the deal, you are in so much pain from the labor that you have to decide for yourself if that's what you want at the time...
YES IT HURTS!!! But so does being in labor!
The best thing about an epidural is that it hurts for about 3-5 minutes, then ALL of the pain is gone and you can sit back and watch your monitor register all kinds of contractions with no pain.
I had one after 23 hours with my daughter... immediately after having it, I was able to relax enough to let my body do what it had to.
I got one asap with my son's labor...
I don't have any problems from it and I'm glad I had them... but it has to be your choice.
Gage how you feel during the labor. It needs to be your choice, no one else's!

Hi! I've had two and had no problems at all. First, they will give you a local just under the skin where they will insert the catheter. That's what I didn't like. But, it's a local - it's numb in just a minute. Then they will insert a needle into your back and leave a catheter in place and take out the needle. Kinda like an I.V. but alot smaller. Anyway, there is pressure and a strange sensation. I had a bit of pain and I don't even know if I would call it pain, it's really weird. But then you're numb from the belly down. I sure did not want to feel the ring of fire so a pinch in the back was ok with me. I plan on having another in just a few months when I can't take the contractions any longer. Now, my friend had an epidural and ended up with some nerve damage but it was because the Dr. had her laying completly on her back with her legs up so far her knees were touching her ears and her hips were even off the table. I don't really understand that cause she was forced to go against gravity and give birth straight up in the air. She was folded in half and smushing the baby so when his head got stuck (go figure) it was right in the nerve spot somewhere by her tailbone and basically bruised her spinal nerves - she had no clue till the epidural wore off. Anyway, this isin't to scare you - her nervre damage wasn't caused by the epidural it was by her idiot doctor. I would read up on it and see if it's for you. It may not be. I'm just a wimp. :)

I am always amazed at any patient who hears what their
doctor is saying, but has NO CLUE what he's talking about.
Dear, its not wrong to ask the doctor "Hey doc, what's an
epidural". Any OB (or his nurse), should have explained all
these details to you already.

This is not a shot you get right now, its a shot that you get
just before the baby delivers. It numbs your body from your
waist down to almost your knees. You will not feel much of
the birth pain. You will only feel a pushing sensation.
Many women love it--some want to experience the entire
birthing process. I don't think the new epidurals are very
painful because a small anesthetic is given before the
actual epidural. If that's what your doctor wants, he probably
suspects that you are not ready for the full birthing process.
You can do that on your second child--or not.

An "epidural" doesn't usually hurt that bad ( I have had three) It is a tiny catheter pushed through a needle into the" epidural space" into the spine, it baths the nerves in anesthesia and relaxes the muscles. Some people feel nothing and the doctor tells them when to push, some it just numbs enough to cope with the pain. If I were you, unless you have a definite birth plan, I would have one! My third child, I went through twenty two hours of hard labor and I was sick the whole time, it was excruciating! I finally decided on an epidural because I couldn't take it any more, and she was born within half of an hour!

It's an epidural and I won't lie to you, they are quite uncomfortable. They numb a place on your back (that will just feel like any other shot). Then they insert the epidural needle. This feels more like pressure on your back. Once that is in, they insert a flexable catheter through the needle. You won't feel this at all. Then they remove the needle and tape the catheter in place. Make sure that you tell the Dr if you have any kind of curvature to your spine like scoliosis. This can make it a little more difficult to insert correctly, but it can be done.

I had an epidural with my second child. I never really had pain with mine just a little discomfort. They numb your back before they insert the epidural. The labor pains hurt worst than the epidural so take your choice discomfort for a few minutes or labor pains. I recommend the epidural it feels great afterwards.

The epidural hurts like nothing you've ever felt before...except contractions...

BUT, the crippling, intense pain is just for 5 seconds whereas, the crippling, intense pain of contractions last for 60 seconds or more every 60 seconds or more...

What's the lesser of two evils?

The EPIDURAL is a labouring women's best friend. I highly recommend it.

They gave me a muscle relaxer, while I was in the beginning terms of labor, and before I was able to get my epidurla. The gave me a shot of novacaine to numb the area and I DID NOT FEEL IT ONE BIT! He was in and out in less than 10 minutes. I do have a very protruding spine when i bend over, I dont know wether that was a factor in having no pain at all.

best of luck to you
