I have a brand new lava lamp and mine doesn't work. I just turned it off, after it being on for 6 hours, because the lava just sits at the bottom, occasionally rising up slightly then dropping back down and sitting there for 30-45 minutes doing nothing.

I'm returning mine to Walmart tomorrow, I suggest you unplug yours, and return it to where you got it. If someone got it for you for tell them it isn't working and you'd like to exchange it for a working one. They should give you the receipt or go with you so you can exchange it.

What type of lava lamp do you have? I'm curious if we have the same type. Mine has red lava and purple liquid and the brand is Hotrock.

Edit:
My new-new one (I've returned the one mentioned above) takes at least 3 hours to really get going. So give it sometime, however if after 6 hours it doesn't do much, then there is probably a problem. On average it should take a few hours to begin working really well. In fact the lava should be completely melted around 4 hours after being turned on.

Lava lamps are made from Gell in side Oil. Won't hurt it BUT the whole idea is to watch the gell float around, right. Get a new one sweetie, pour a glass of wine and enjoy !!!! Just my humble opinion though, Nixie from the Burg

The stuff inside a lava lamp is flammable (or at least they usually are) so it might not be safe to use it if its making noise. Doesn't sound good
