How do I get money to start a business?

I've been looking into starting my own audio engineering business. I have had credit problems in the past and I'll probably have a tough time getting a loan. My mentor even offered to sell me his equipment and some of his client contracts because he wants to retire. What alternatives are there to bank loans?
