I own a Magellan RoadMate 300, couple years old now. It is fairly basic, like low end models available for $300-$400. You can type in an address and it will tell you out loud how to get there, turn by turn. Also displays maps, will find service stations, restaurants, other "points of interest". Mine has no internal battery, so you cannot carry it around while hiking. It does remember addresses you have entered, in case you go back to the same place again.

I am a computer repairman, and often drive to service calls for new customers. I could not get by without it, particularly when it's dark out and street signs / house numbers are all but illegible.

I had to download detailed maps for Illinois, which is fine since I rarely leave the state. Newer models tend to have the entire US pre-loaded, but read the fine print to make sure.

I will recommend Garmin, Garmin is the leader and Pioneers on GPS units and maps, I personally own a nice Garmin C550 For automobile and for me right now I believe is the best or one of the best in the market, you can check out their latest TV commercial here: http://www.garmin.com/tv/tv.html or you can go directly to their website at: http://www.garmin.com/ , the only thing I can say is that you won't be disappointed.

Good Luck!
