I personaly hate it! People spending hours to look perfict. Dont get me wrong, looking good is important, but to match, get up to date stuff, and worst of all make up! make up is good, unless you put on too much. I also hate the shoe thing. I have only 5 pairs of shoes and they have a role. My sis has 20 pairs and only wears about 3. Some guys get $300 shoes to look Gangsta, and dont want to get them dirty. Fashion, Bah humbug!

Why, you ask? Because we're told to be fashionable. Advertisements seldom say it outright, but by appealing to various parts of our psyche (bandwagon appeal, snob appeal, faulty appeal to authority, to name a few) they make a case that doesn't need logic to win us over.
The desire to look good is in our genes. Advertisers take advantage of this to subconsciously make us feel a little worse about ourselves and our potential for attracting a mate. As the ideal of beauty changes, people buy more things to conform to the ideal, and thus we see the reasoning behind your sister's shoe hoard
This isn't true for everyone who has a lot of clothes, though. I can name a number of people that like to make the fashion statement of "Huh?" by throwing wildly different fashions together. (I count myself in this category). Those that do consider their appearance carefully, but not in an I-want-to-be-sexy-like-the model-on-TV sort of way. These people have a lot of clothes and shoes, and wear them all.
As for makeup, I don't have much to say for or against it. I agree that it's best done in small doses, but trying to say that to the gal at the counter is pointless. I attribute most overdone makeup to dissatisfaction with one's current age. Young girls, I have noticed, often gob on mascara and lipstick and eyeliner in an attempt to look like 20-something pop stars (I think it makes them look like preteen prostitutes... it looks horrible!) whereas older women gob on foundation, blush, and more mascara to look like 30-something starlets. What many don't realize is that it does the exact opposite. They both lack maturity and and accurate self-image.
The one I just can't reason out is the $300 gangsta look... and then avoiding puddles like a girly-girl. That's just ridiculous. See the opening paragraph for any semblance of insight.

Fashion is way of communicating to other people how you think and what your preferences are. If you dress like a gangsta you probably wouldn't be attracted to women who dress like missionaries. Just a guess.
High fashion is a statement about how you view the world. So you attract other people that think the same way.
My husband was looking for a woman who, among other things, didn't spend a lot of money on clothes. And I'm ok with that!

Personally, I don't spend hours getting perfect and I like to be fashionable, but I don't have a huge wardrobe and massive collection of shoes, I mean has anyone ever heard of mixing and matching, for example, say I had 4 singlet tops, 2 plain and 2 patterned you can match the two plain over top of each other, you could do them all separate, you could put a pattered top over a plain top etc, etc, I believe that you don't need that much in your wardrobe too be fashionable!

For some, being fashionable is a hobby. They enjoy looking good and taking care of themselves. It's all a matter of opinion. You may not like putting on makeup, but for some people they really enjoy it. It's all a matter of taste. I think if you want to be fashionable, that's your business.

People think to be happy they have to look like every one else. Which is impossible because every one looks different. Which is a good thing because it would get boring if every one looked the same.
