I don't feel like reading all the replies, so i skimmed..

I'd say you may love both the same, but in a different manner. animal life and human life are pretty much alike, both are alike, the only difference is that dogs do not have the social ability as we do.

I loved my dog maxie to death, and that stayed true. i miss my dog and i wish i could have her back.

each person is entitled to their own feelings/opinions.

also, a humans potential is not that much higher than a dogs. because we humans just create a lot of bad things, like.. microwaves ( not the kinds that cook food), radiowaves, etc. and that harms all life on earth, but do we care? no, of course not, we only concentrate on what will benefit the human race. that's why the dodo are extinct and many animals are going extinct.
now, this is traveling off subject, so.. moving on.

people get bitter and angry because your opinion/view/feelings differ from theirs. that's whats so great/bad about humans. if our opinions differ, we argue/fight/get angry. how's that for an answer? probably not the best. but it's my 3.1415926535898 cents.

I sure don't believe that humans have more "value" and the potential for good doesn't say much. Especially since humans are the ones destroying the enviroment.
I don't have a child but my cat is my baby. For many people their animals are part of the family. There are many people who would rather save their pets then a person. I think it depends on the situation really. For those who critize a persons love of an animal, they've obviously never had a strong bond with an animal. They should keep this in mind though, people who have pets live longer. So if our pets can help us live longer isn't only fair to love them as much as some people do?

They get angry because their minds are not open to the fact that a person is a person regardless of species. They do not understand the fact that all sentient beings feel and are willing and able to love and enjoy companionship.

I agree with you that all life is precious, and I admire you for being brave enough to share how you feel in spite of the fact that you are likely to recieve negative feed back.

I definitely think that those who only love humans are not as emotionally and intellectually evolved as those who love people of other species. And it's very sad for both humans and non-humans.

Interesting. I appreciate your affection for your K9 friend but you might be misguided about the value of life. Most people would chose a human life before a dog. Therefore, they don't understand your perspective.
For you child's sake, I hope you never have to make that choice.

Probably because they see you as placing your dog on the same level as your children or other people. Some people don't get it and never will. As for me since liitle on I have had pet dogs cats gerbals hampsters and I can say they become like family, when one is lost it is as if one of your own has gone. I don't let it woory me about what other people think.

A major difference between human life and animal life is the potential for good. Humans have so much potential that can be used for good. Animals just do what they do, regardless.

Therefore, a human life is more precious.

I myself felt angry. I felt so bcos i think..
Cm'on it's ''only'' a dog and it can replace human beings. Even there r many stories prove that dogs r men's good friends.
But. . .
God creates Eve to accompany Adam.
And He asked human beings to take care of the other creatures(dogs).
Hope u get what i meant.

I can understand your position only if you don't have kids. If you have kids and pets and can't differentiate then I would say that you have a problem. Children are so much more than pets but that doesn't take away the value of a pet. Saying that a pet is equal to a child does devalue a child. That's why people object.

because the love for a child is completely different than it is for a dog. for parents that have kids.
