I'm in Colorado (so consider our economy) and it sounds like I would be doing light cleaning like vacuuming and folding laundry. Is $8 too high to request?

No, it's very reasonable. Depending on the type of cleaning and the size of the home, it could be as high as $10 per hour. Good luck.

I was going to suggest $10/hour. You may want to charge by the specific job too. For instance, if you're asked to clean the bathroom and kitchen area, you might charge $50 for three hours of cleaning time. Cleaning a living room (which should be relatively easier) might be $20 for an hour of time.

In Chicago, the going rate is $15-20 per hour for cleaning (vacumming, cleaning kitchens/bathrooms, mopping, etc). If you are in Denver area, expect a higher wage. If you are in outlying areas (especially southeast Colorado), demand will be lower. And, as a result of lower demand, wages will likely be lower.

It all depends on whether you're a meticulous cleaner....or you just think that you are. If you are meticulous, people will be willing to pay you more than $8.00. Don't sell yourself short. I used to clean 8,000 sq ft homes, and that is not something you want to be underpaid to do. Good luck, dear.
