My daughters hamster had the same thing.
The poor guy couldn't put his back leg down it got so big... it was a tumor, and the vet took it out.
It cost an arm and a leg, but he saved the little thing and it lived until it was 2 1/2, which is good for a hamster, and good for my daughter, because it helped teach her about caring for your animals.

Hamsters only live about 2 years. Any older than that and they start getting tumors.
If the hamster is young, it could be an abcess. See a vet to have it cleaned and get meds to help.

Could you describe it more? If the hamster is old (3+ years) it might be best to have it put down if something is wrong. A vet should be able to clear it up though.

maybe he was alergic to someting?? did you take him to the vet and check maybe put some cream on the boil. weird........
