When I'm in the city, the gym is mediocre. The toilets are inferior because the tissue paper is hard and the toilet seats are broken, writing on the wall. The walls are crumpled and the mirror is broken. No buckets for pads or tampons. The hallway is dirty and the cafeteria smells like barf. The food is second class and I hardly learn a thing. My books are 5 years old and many activities are not offered at my school. We only get offer basketball or football! NO ONE ENCOURAGES MY ART BUT MY MOM, instead they discourage me! Our teams suck. Spit, gum and trash everywhere!

BUT WHEN I GO TO NEWTON, or some suburb, the first thing I feel is welcomed. The bathroom have new walls, mirrors, music, soft tissue, toilet AND EVEN MINTS! The education is very competitive. The books are up to date. The food is first class. They have things like lacrosse, ice skating, fencing, martial arts, tennis, and woodwork. They play national games. Their teams are better. THERE"S NOT ONE LICK OF TRASH!

The simple answer is that white neighborhoods are usually more affluent. Since schools are paid mostly by property taxes, the cities that have more valuable homes get more property taxes to pay for the schools. that means the more affluent (white) towns have more money to spend on better quality schools.

People would get angry if their taxes from their properties were taken for schools in a poorer neighborhood where their children will not attend school.

I'm not saying this is right- its just the way it is. When it comes to college the children in the good school districts have a better advantage. Since everyone has to take the same standardized admission tests (ACT,SAT, etc), the children in the good schools will have had a better education and therefore will do better on the tests.

This is why we have affirmative action- so that the kids from the poor school districts with less academic advantages will still be able to go to college.- it should be a case by case basis though. Some white kids come from poor districts while some black kids come from affluent neighborhoods. in this case, the white childe should get the affirmative action, not the black student.

It has a lot to do with property and school taxes. If, you live in a more affluent area, where property and school taxes are high, then your schools will be nice, newer, modern and progressive. Some states have funds that are alloted to schools with high numbers of disadvantaged students (based on free and reduced lunches), but, some states simply do not have the funds and inner city schools are the first to suffer (without any city tax money to help). You can try for an intradistrict transfer to a different school (thanks to "No Child Left Behind), but, you will have to work that out with your school and have your own transportation.

We have schools in our school district that have more funding than others, due to their numbers of disadvantaged students. Unfortunately, these schools are often in poorer neighborhoods and have lower test scores due to higher numbers of English language learners. And, many people view these schools as being inferior and lacking opportunity, when the opposite is true. Public school is what you make of it, you can still make it to a good university despite your environment! If, you want an arts program, then, you should approach your PTA for a grant. If, you don't have a PTA, then, you and your mom need to be more proactive and bring together other parents and students and figure how to make this situation better. In my own experience, I have raised $2200 in books for my son's school by having a book fair. Again, public school is what you make of it!

It is a matter of color. It totally is. I also think that there is a lot of internalized racism going on in those kinds of situations also. It is based on race because when a person of color looks around and sees that the white kids get more opportunities that makes it about race.
Also I truly believe that oppression is interdependent. Socio-economic class, color, sexism, it all plays into each other. Some people were talking about how it is a matter of location or wealth. But it is statistically harder for a person of color to make it in the same way that a privileged white person to make it. I am not blaming anyone with that it's just how it is right now. In order to create change in this stuff we just need to get the word out. Awareness is key. I bet that if half the kids at Newton knew what was going on then they would be into working on that. Also it would be an eye-opener for those people who would have an opportunity to think more about why affirmative action is needed in this society.

I am not saying it is fair, but have you considered that it is not that they have well paid elves cleaning up after them as much as it is that they do not destroy the school around them.

Also unfortunately schools receive funding 2 ways: through the property taxes of the homes and businesses in their area and from the state and federal government based on attendance and test scores. If you attend a school that is in a low income area and has poor attendece records and/or test scores then you are in trouble.

I am sorry you are having to deal with it. Maybe look in to housing in other areas, there are apartments every where and maybe being in a smaller space or further from work for your parents would work if it meant your education is better.

Good luck

Our shool has what is called a millage and the city residents vote to pass the millage that says how much money they will pay to go to school improvements over a certain amount of time. I believe we pay $150 a year for 20 years. We do not have ice skating or any of the other stuff you talked about and we have trash all over and our teams suck too And in some of our classes there aren't enough books to go around. So quit your whining suck it up and realize it's not just you and not all white people have it great.

This is not a race question, but a matter of where you live. I live in a small town that is about 85% white and our school sounds exactly like yours.

The problem is the students (and the faculty for that matter) don't respect our environment. They destroyed the bathrooms and classrooms, our football field gets driven on in the middle of the night and the bleachers get graffiti sprayed on them weekly. Our books have so many names, that we've started writing on the pages when we get them, half of them don't have covers, and many more are so abused that they are useless.

Until our students and faculty try to fix the problem instead of causing it,it wont get better.

Don't make this a black and white thing, because it isn't. It's a respect for your own environment thing.

No offense, but that sounds very stereotypical! Not all white schools are like that. I have actually seen some minority schools that looked real nice too! I think alot of how the school looks has to do with how it is being taken care of, not by the color of a person's skin.

some possible reasons the school you attend is subpar
1) age of the building
2) differenct school district
3) adminstartation seems not to care
4( books could be coming next year as part of the buying cycle
5) was it torn up during the year
6) is it close to being remodeled or rebuilt

I think you need to stop belaming the color of peoples skin. It is the behavior of the people that are in that school. Why are the mirror broken. Why is there writing on the wall. Could it possibly be that people broke them!
