My roommate has someone living in our apartment, that is not on our lease. This person does not pay rent. I've tried talking to her with no luck. I'm really sick of the whole situation. Do I report my friend to our landlord and risk straining our relationship? I do have to live with this person and don't want there to be an tension. Should I tell the landlord I want out of the lease all together?

have you talked to your friend about the situation and how you feel? and if this person is a true friend they should listen to how you feel and kn ow the situation and that its unfair to you because the other person is living on your expense. so you can tell your friend how you feel and work out the situation and for you not to look like the bad one and have tension your roomate that you feel that its not right.

Since you've talked to your roommate and had no success, if you find the situation intolerable [and it is not fair to have a roommate who is not fiscally responsible], then you will have to consider your options. If you tell the landlord, could you do so w/o your roommate knowing it was you that reported the extra tenant? Your roommate could always lie and say that the person was just visiting overnight or something like that. You could tell your roommate that if the situation does not change that you will try to get out of the lease so that you can move. You are being taken advantage of, and this will continue as long as you let it. You are not happy with the present situation, and will not be happy with whatever you do about it, so you haven't lost anything here. If the new person moves out and the old roommate is angry - oh well - they will get over it, or can move out themselves.

That would be one way of handling it, but 1st try talking to your roommate, & tell her how unfair it is to you. After all, you agreed to one roommate. Not one roommmate, & everyone else that she decides to invite in. Then if she doesn't get it then you will be justified in bringing in the landlord to take over the situation.
You do have one other option open to you as well, & that is to tell your friend either the extra tennant goes or they both go, & you can find another roommate.
Cheers!

try talking to her again, tell her that ur friendship is important and dont want an apartment situation to ruin it, and how uncomfortable that living arragment is. and if ur friend doesnt get it then u can just move out.

or u can tell ur friend that the other person has to pay rent as well!
