Well, it could be many things...
Some people may do this to get points for answers,
others may do this becuase they might actually want to help someone...
Others may do this because they need the points we get from the answering of questions so that then they may ask more questions.
And others just do it because, how do you say it? Because they are bored or just need something to do so that they can then "chill"...
Sorry if my answer seemed off. I am from Argentina, and it hard to explain my answer and translate very good...

With the invention of the Internet, it was only time for something like this to be created. We need to feel appreciated or even needed. How many of us have checked our E-Mails to find a nice little message saying your answer has been chosen as the best answer. That's why we do it. Only we won't do it on a small scale like giving a homeless person a quarter, we need to do it on a global scale where people from around the world can say "Wow, that Mac guy is pretty smart"

Good question!!

Answering a question boosts the ego.

Somehow, by answering a question, we feel superior to the asker... or if the question is a tricky one, we feel as though we have passed an examination by answering it. I think there will be very few who are visiting this forum in order to help needy people!! Satisfaction of self pride seems to be the driving reason for most of us.

Some enjoy helping people and some enjoy feeding their addiction that they have no good reason for.
