my laptop will not connect to road runner?

i am connecting it to the usb cord bvecause it does not have a ethernet connection can anybody help

It should work automatically. Since it doesn't and you don't have an ethernet connection, I would suggest purchasing a PCMCIA network adapter. It costs you about $40, but you will get a more reliable and faster connection this way.
