There are 64 squares on a chess board. But if you mean squares of any size, not just squares as they would be used in the game of chess, the the answer is:

8^2 = 64 1 by 1 squares
7^2 = 49 2 by 2 squares
6^2 = 36 3 by 3 squares
5^2 = 25 4 by 4 squares
4^2 = 16 5 by 5 squares
3^2 = 9 6 by 6 squares
2^2 = 4 7 by 7 squares
1^2 = 1 8 by 8 squares

The answer then is the sum of the squares of the numbers 1 thru 8. The formula for the sum of the squares 1 thru n is:

n(n+1)(2n+1)/6

Plugging in for n = 8 we get:

8(8+1)(2*8+1)/6 = 8*9*17/6 = 204

Hmm what do you mean by squares? Do you mean individual squares, one that a chess piece is placed on? Or do you mean all squares of all sizes?

If you mean the first then the answer is 64.

Otherwise it's much larger, 204 to be exact.

The formula is n(n+1)(2n+1)/6

So...

8(9)(17)/6 = 204
