Some people who look OK are considered overweight due to their BMIs. I tthink 60% of people are overweight, not obese.

According to a study by the health department in 2002, six out fo ten Americans are overweight. This means that these people weigh 10 to 30 or more pounds over a healthy body weight. Being obese mean you weigh over 30 pounds over a healthy weight. The study also showed that four in ten adults in the US will be obese within five years after the study, thus in 2007.

Americans are gaining one to two pounds a year, says James Hill, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in Denver. Hill predicted that, at the current rate, 39% of Americans will be obese by 2008.

I know there are many overweight people in the U.S. I would agree that 60% are probably overweight, but not necessarily obese.

But then again, sometimes if you really look around, I wonder how people can find clothes to fit.

I travel a lot and in most other countries, you rarely find anyone obese. In other countries, people walk more, don't have all you can eat buffets, etc.

A friend of mine from Norway came to visit and was just shocked at all the all you can eat buffets. I went to visit Norway and was shocked at the high prices of eating out, especially meat and you got very little. I also seen people walking everywhere because cars and gasoline are so expensive. I also didn't see any obese people.

I work on a college campus that has many foreign students. I have never seen a fat, much less obese foreign student on the campus. Someone pointed out to me that all the overweight people were the Americans that are used to living here. They were right. You definitely won't find too many people starving in the U.S.

The world has gone obese mad, you only have to be a few pounds over your BMI weight these days and people say your obese, its pathetic this obsession with weight, I have no idea if 60% of Americans are obese, its probably media hype, according to our media 1 in every 5 over here are obese too, I sat outside the bank last week waiting for my hubby and counted over 50 people walking past me and I didn't see one obese person amongst them, but I did see a lot of people who appeared very underweight, so like you I find these statistics hard to believe.

Not 60% but about 30% and that is bad enough

I think you would be a little disappointed if you came to the USA looking for that.

There are both extremes. I don't think it would be that far off from what you see in Europe. Sounds like media hype for the most part.

I dont find it hard to believe. Times I have been to America I have seen a lot of large people. And their portion sizes are massive and you can supersize food in restaurants too.
