"Your Acting Career" By Rebecca Najas
"Audition" by Michael Shurtleff
Most of the previous answers address the SKILL or ART of acting. But the most important thing to remember is this a business.
I read quite a few books on the subject before I turned pro, these were the two most useful. Respectively, they helped me set up a realistic (and successful) approach toward building a professional careeer as an actor in NYC, and how to maintain a competitive edge in a highly competitive business. Good Luck!

Acting; the first 6 lessons by Boleslavsky and An Actor Prepares by Stanislavsky are the ones to read if you are serious about acting.

i agree with the other dude. Don't be hurt but i hope you can read the words better than you can spell them ( i couldn't think of a nicer way to phrase that and i know i will get rated down for it, too) sorry. Good luck acting, though- if that's what you wanted to do with the book; that is.
