I would first try isopropyl/ethyl alchohol. Acetone will likely melt your plastic, most nail polish remover contains acetone. The toothpaste sounds like it might work but I would try alcohol first. If the marker has been there a while it may have absorbed into the material and just my be 'permanent'. Hope it comes off!

Most of these answers did read the whole question. Anything acetone or solvent based will mess up the plastic. There is know a water based version of Goof Off that will take the marker off if it is not black and not harm the plastic. If the marker is black it may leave a purple mark.

If you are looking for something specially made for removing markers writing and those sort of things, go to a home depot and ask them the question... they will show you. That is what I did, and I got mine called "oops" which is acetone based (solvent) and gets rid of the markers without much scratching. This one is also used to get rid of Glue, Gum, Tar, paint, etc, so you can keep it for your next coming "oops".

I had an old piece of tupperware that had been marked with a name years ago. I first sprayed it with 3 different kinds of hair spray because I've used hair spray on ink stains on clothes with good results but nothing happened here with the permanent marker....then I sprayed it with KRUDD KUTTER and brushed it with an old toothbrush....and bam...it came off. There is just a slight stain there now but you can't even tell there was a name there!! Hope this works for you. Love Krudd Kutter for a cleaner...even use it on my tennis shoes to clean them!

Sorry but there is reason they call it "permanent"..lol
You can try scratching it off but you will actually be removing a layer of the plastic in the process

Cheap hair spray like 'Aqua Net" works like magic! i am old enough to remember when Grocery stores used ink stamps for prices - i mean before little paper lables - yes! When i was a stocker, we had to change prices. A squirt of cheap hair spray and a quick wipe (with a cloth) worked every time!

If you have the marker, try contacting the manufacturer via phone or web-site. They may have the specific information you're looking for.
