They need to send the Big Unit packing, I'm sorry to say. He won 17 games last season, but had an ERA of 5.00, which means if the Yankees were not a good-hitting team, then he would have had a losing record. They need to trade him, get some younger players in return, like they did with Sheffield, and go after Zito. If not Zito, then they can wait for Phil Hughes, 20 years old, to get some time in the minors until he is ready in May or June. I was happy to get Johnson, but I don't see him getting better at age 43, and he has never seemed comfortable in NY. He needs to go back to the West Coast, and probably to the N.L.

The Yankees would de well to trade him. He has been on the downswing for a coupla years now. Of course, I really don't like the Yankees the slightest, but if he played for my team and they had the option to trade Johnson to free up money to possibly pursue Zito or get a young pitcher in return (doubtful that would happen...ppitching as hard to come by as it is) I would hope they would do it. Randy was once the most feared and best pitcher in the bigs, now he's just a potential hazard that has lost the zip, is a tweaked back away from lying on the DL for three months, and frankly had no business winning 17 games last season. If he'd pitched for KC Royals he'd have lost 20 games with his 5.00 ERA. Like the rest of us, he's not getting any younger.

If I was a team trading for Randy Johnson, I would only trade for him if the Yankees agree to pay a chunk of his salary. Aside from that, I wouldn't do it. Randy Johnson is still a decent pitcher, but he isn't the Big Unit as we knew him anymore. $16 million for a 43 year old pitcher is good money gone to waste. Unless you are the Yankees, Red Sox or the Dodgers, then most teams don't have that kind a money in the budget to throw away on a pitcher on the downside of his career.

I think it's wise for both parties to split and go their separate ways. The Unit should go back to the NL where he dominated for so many years. But I believe it's the smaller market teams that he does so well in. With the New York media, he was always under the gun and his performance reflected that. Going back to Arizona would help him immensely.
From the Yankee's point of view, if they can unload his contract and space in the rotation, they could make a strong move for Zito. But the question is...can Zito perform up to the Yankee fans' high expectations?

I am praying that the Diamondbacks or the Padres make the deal. It was a big mistake two years ago to sign an elderly version of the Unit. 15-17 wins per season do not equate to 16 million dollars. They could have used that money wiser.

Keep him! I'm not the biggest fan of him. But i like seeing the lefty pitch and you can't look by that 17 and 11 record. Or the 17 and 8 from 2005. His era's have been pretty ugly but the Bombers batting can back that up. He's a smart pitcher, I'd keep him. (this is talking common sense. I wouldn't keep him if i could get Johan Santana for him.)

don't you think ny needs to develop talent? if ny is going to insist on the greatest offense ever that's great, but they would be better to insist on the greatest pitching staff ever. a ny fan should realize this and let front office know that a 40 year old johnson wasn't wise and a 43 year old one is less than wise. retire randy you were one of the great ones. ny fans need to look at the last few series winners and realize pitching is were its at. look out for Detroit next year loaded with young experienced arms now!

For the Yanks' sake, I would trade him. He's old and washed up, and just not worth the money anymore. Plus, the Rocket may be going back to NYC to join Pettitte. Being an Astros' fan, I hate losing Roger.

Johnson did good in his prime, that guy is just getting too old, I think he should just retire...He did not do so hot last year..17 wins yes, but 5.00 era, the yankees hitting saved his wins. That man just needs to take his money and run.

I'm a yankee fan too, and I think they should send him packing because he's not the same big unit anymore
