it was not a typical kids movie, i saw it a long time ago in school, it had a bit of violence, i think the main character was a wolf or a rabbit, if i can recall he was on a search for something

Could it have been Watership Down?

This is the plot outline from imdb-
"Based upon Richard Adam's novel of the same title, this animated feature delves into the surprisingly violent world of a warren of rabbits as they seek to establish a new colony free of tyranny and human intervention. Frightening and bloody in some scenes"

It was quite a violent and harrowing movie and definately not a cartoon of fluffy bunnies for young kids.

Karma.

I would say "Watership Down", since it seems more likely to have been shown in a school. Also, the film was rather violent, and involved a search for a new home, or warren, for the rabbits. It also includes music from Art Garfunkel. The book, of the same title, is also more likely to be on a reading list than "Who Censored Roger Rabbit", the source for "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?", another 80s film with a rabbit central figure.
