The star in the Macy's logo comes from a tattoo that Mr. Macy got as a teenager when he worked on a Nantucket whaling ship.

The Macy's red star logo is derived from a tatoo that R.H. Macy had. There used to be a plaque at the main entrance honoring Isadore and Ida Straus, who died when the Titanic sank in the north Atlantic.
