By law you suppose to buy a round trip if you are not a citizen of the country that you are traveling to.

They do not force you to buy a round trip ticket. You might want to go to a country to stay for a long time (job, family, etc) and will not know when to return. So you are at your liberty how you buy the ticket.

Return ticket is a benefit for the customer because it is cheaper - of course, than two one-way tickets. It also guarantees you, to a point, of having a seat on the return date instead of trying to find a ticket quickly. Imagine, as a tourist, spending extra money on hotel rooms waiting for a ticket to become available so you can go home.

The benefit to the airline is purely "bum-on-seat". The flight is guarantee to have passengers. The airline loses money if they can't recoup operating costs of fuel, food, staff if the seats aren't filled.

I do not think anyone forces you to buy the ticket. You can always buy one way ticket but it will be almost 75 to 80% of your two way ticket.

A two way ticket is an advantage to the customer if he/she is planning to return. Many of these tickets are valid for 6 months or so.

And if you are planning to not to return, you might as well buy a two way ticket , go one way and then cancel the other way ticket, you would still be on profit.

The Airline industry is in rough winds and any deal better than a one way ticket would be of help to the airline company.

If you are not a citizen of a country, you usually need to show that you have purchased your ticket to leave the country at the end of your stay. I'm pretty sure that this has something to do with it.
