I have 2 512 MB PC3200 (DDR400) ram sticks. I am thinking of getting Another Gig. So my question is, can I buy just one gigabite stick, or do I have to buy two 512Mb sticks? Also, the two sticks I have now both have heatsinks, so does the next set of ram I buy also have to have heatsinks?

Mixing two different sizes might work. But, the computer functions much smoother with the same size. I understand getting one instead of two sticks is cheaper, however the performance may not be the best. Now for the other question, yes you would benefit a great deal if you got heat spreaders for your RAM. Also keep in mind the same speed RAM do not need to be the same, as long they are equal or greater of that to the bus speed.

it is cheaper with out heat sinks but i would but them because it would help keep them cool during the running time as far as mixing two different types i would not recomend it. first you have to make sure what the computer can accept as an upgrade. though i would get the 1 gig stick

Do you have three or Four RAM slots on your motherboard?
Read your manual, if you don't have one for the motherboard check with the companies website. They will usually have them in PDF format. Look for Matched Pair RAM in Yahoo. Look for single paging vs dual paging of RAM.

If you add or increase your memory do it with the same manufactures..ie Kingston, Crucial, Ultra , Whatever you want to use . Do not mix them . It will cause problems. and make damn sure its comptible with your system. If they do not come with heat spreaders you can add them and I would advise this. It keeps them cooler. i add them anyway.

If your motherboard supports it, you can buy a 1GB stick. heatsinks are up to you, I would add one if I were you.
