The first thing to do is have all the on-board modules diagnosed for any codes being stored. If there are VSS codes stored in all of these modules, chances are you have a bad speed sensor or the wiring to it is faulty. If there are no codes in any modules, except the cluster, chances are it is the cluster itself. There were so many of these that had intermittent faults. Before buying anything to repair this, do some diagnosing.

In some cases it can be the transimission speed sensor but I have found it more common for the cavalier and sunfire to have a problem with the circuitry on the back of the speedometer itself. The easiest way to fix is to replace the complete speedo cluster which you can get inexpensively at any auto wreckers for about $100.

Sell the car or trade it in. The problem is it's a Cavalier. If the speedometer is the only problem, it's just the beginning. Wait a little longer and you'll find all sorts of new problems.

the speed sensor on the trans should cause a check engine light, might be in the instrument panel. the speed sensor on the front wheel hubs are for ABS braking, so the system can determine if the wheels are rolling at the same speed and act accordingly. if its bad your ABS light would come on.

chevy man is right it probably is a speed sensor on the side of your transmission that is if your abs (anti-lock brake light) is not on, if it is there is also a wheel speed sensor located on your front hub bearings( giant bearing the axles fit into) if both of these ideas fail it could be as simple as a wiring problem

That all depends, Is the Service Engine Soon lamp on? If so, chances are it is a VSS problem (Vehicle Speed Sensor), and located on the transmission.
