I'm serious, asking because I don't know and want to learn. It can't be timesaving. I had to stop and think about it, while if I had just spelled out all the words I could have zipped through it. What is the purpose behind "license plate speech" on the internet?

Lazy and/or uneducated.

Instant messaging has given birth to that abbreviated form of communication, and so have sites like this one, where one is limited to a certain number of text characters. However, the result comes across as laziness and/or illiteracy. I cringe when I read it, and it always makes me think that the person is uneducated, which may not be the case at all. Sometimes I think good grammar, punctuation and spelling are lost arts in this age of technology, and I shudder to think what the written language will be like ten years from now.

I found a letter once in a Bus Depot. The author wrote it like she talked. So...I'd say that some ppl write like they talk.

Lazy, ignorant of the English language or they just don't know any better and they type like they talk.

I think it's a shortcut for certain words, but I agree with you, it's rude since most 'ppl' have to try and decipher it when reading it.
