I am not overly impressed by any one and I respect mostly everone. Why? Because I know that there is a great equalizer called death. No matter how beautiful, smart, ugly, stupid, rich or poor. We are all susceptible to dying--so on at least one plane, We are all equal.

Well empathy requires us to understand what others are feeling though the difficult times as well as the good times. You may have never broken a bone but you may have been very ill or delivered a baby, so you know pain. Tapping into those feelings to be able to understand others is how you empathize.
People often can't empathize with other people who may be at a higher level such as their boss or the President of the United States. But, they are easily empathitic to people that could be viewed as lesser than themselves, such as the poor or the homeless.
Universaly, if you are seeking a way to be empathitic, just be aware of the different cultures and how they view themselves so that you may better understand those in different places in the world.
Good question.

Travel to a 3rd world country for a month and walk around the streets. Or go to the poorest part of your town and talk with people. Don't make it just a short trip--the longer and more often you stay the greater your empathy will grow.

Suffer some personal tragedy. It's hard to not feel empathy for others, when you know the real meaning of pain yourself.
BTW - Is it possible to have empathy for those that never demonstate empathy?

Work in a Call Center, part of your job is to keep empathy. And all of the crap you have to take, getting yelled at, cursed at, insulted, all day long, every day, that will keep you "Down to Earth".

Everytime I go to the poorer parts of the Tuolumne Miwok nation it brings me back down to earth. I think they best way to stay down to earth is to get invloved regularly in some kind of service to people who are disadvantaged. It's good for them and good for you, because it gives you a much greater appreciation for the simpler, more important things in life.

Be willing to do random acts of kindness. Hold the door for people, help someone push their car out of traffic if they are broke down. Pick up litter, help someone carry their groceries. Mow your neighbors lawn. And always smile and say hello.

Get lost in the Earth. We can all remain "down to earth" if we are in fact still that, we should just get lost and become intertwined in what we believe to be normal.

Don't let first impression be your lasting impression, let your mind be open to all circumstances of all people.
Let all situation be possible, but realize what is probable and what is not.
Basic courtesy go a long way.
