Players will shoot three free throws when they are fouled in the act of shooting behind the 3-point arc. If you don't know, the 3 point arc is the outer most arc on the basketball court, and there are two on each side of the court. So they are worth three points, thus the player shoots 3 free throws. And if the player makes the 3pt shot and is fouled. They get one more free throw, thus a 4 pt. play. Hope u understand now.

When in the process of shooting a shot behind the 3 point arc and a defending player hits you. you are rewarded with 3 freethrows, unless you still make it, which would result in 3 points plus 1 freethrow making it a 4 point play.

Either he was fouled behind the 3 point mark or it was a flagrant foul, he'll get 3 shots.
