I have a 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis 5.0 with the 4-speed automatic.(a4od???), anyway, the transmission is going bad, and I happen to have a newly rebuilt 1984 Marquis auto trans.(also a4od???) sitting in my garage. Would this trans. be a direct swap? Is it the same? Were there differences in the computer controls between 84-90? It would be a shame to pay to have the '90 trans rebuilt when I have a new '84 sitting there...any answers welcome...

It should work fine, use the 84 ring gear, torque converter, etc. But remember, the 84 has to be adjusted correctly or it will self destruct with in the first mile of driving. Have a trans shop install it for you. This happened to me with an 84 T-Bird. It cost me $1500.00 to repair the thing after wards.
I would recommend that you measure the tail stock to see it they are the same. Then check to see if the slip yoke is the same also. And the linkage on the side of the trans too. They should be. But you never know. Ford had a way of screwing things up. (Changing things mid stream.)
