It ia recommended that you not drink tap water in Mexico because the pipes are old, leaky and allow contamintion into the water in many places. Most Mexican people drink it without problems, but even they get sick sometimes. In big tourist resorts, they often have safe filtered water..always ask. otherwise, use bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth. I live in Mexico and municipalities here just do not have the money for modern water filtration systems.

Puerto Vallarta reportedly has the best water system in Mexico. There are a few others but not many. I still drink bottled

Well, I live in Monterrey (northern Mexico) and I drink tap water all the time... I have never got sick ever. But locals just don't drink it not because it is actually bad, but because we are accostumed to drink bottled water already. So yeah, it all depends in which city you live in.

hmmm
it pretty much depends on where you are..
I'm Mexican and my suggestions to foreign its to drink from a bottle of water, cause we are already used to the bad waters..
however, you may use the tap water for washing dishes and brush your teeth safely without any problem.. unless you want to be extremely care full. Not always trust the locals, they are used to the food and water! better safe then sorry.

Well guys if there is something that characterize Americans is that they don't trust water sources. Id been living in Mexico for 10 years (Monterrey), always drank tap water and never gotten sick. If Mexican drink it why should us not drink it?

Bottled water is as good as ours in the US. Other than that the public drinking water is not what we are used to, and you're better off drinking bottled drinks.

Even the locals do not drink the water. You must get filtered water. Even brushing your teeth you shouldnt wash off your brush with unfilted water, and washing dishes must be done with filtered water as well. I live in Mexico about 2 months every year and its annoying but you get used to it.

Rule of thumb: when ever over seas only drink bottled water if not in a first world country.
