When it is thundering play music so the dog doesn't get startled by the sudden noise.

this is actually really simple. Get a recording of thunder, check Lime Wire or they sell CD's at stores, you play the thunder while doing something fun with your dog, such as playing fetch, eating, what ever he likes the most. When the dog hears thunder he will begin to think of it as something positive. When the dog starts to become anxious while hearing thunder you need to be assertive. Remember, dogs used to live in packs, that is why you, the owner, has to be pack leader. A man by the name of Cesar Millan is a professional dog trainer who has a show on the National Geographic channel cal "the dog whisperer" You can get on the National Geographic web-site and look up the show and find tips for these kind of things. Remember be assertive and let him know the it's alright. The best way is to stand tall next to him, say shhh, snap your fingers and look him in the eye. It may sound wierd but it does work. If he knows you are in charge, he won't be affraid because he will know you are protecting him.

When a thunder storm approaches calm him. Soothe him, pamper him. Give him his favorite food, and a treat, and let him sit on your bed with him.

Soothing him, hugging him, petting him during thunderstorms only nurtures the anxiety. Give him an alternate task to do-sit, stay, down....distract him from the fear.

just give him reassurance and make sure he has a nice place he can hide and feel safe.
