There're 6 of us, going to Taipei early next year. Where's the best place, near to city, to stay? Any service apartments available?

There should be alot of motels around. If you're going for somewhere expensive, you can go to the Yuan Shang Fan Dian.

Lodging in Taipei is usually not a problem. How long are you staying?
If just for a few days, then you should just consider hotels (i.e. Howard Hotel on Xinyi or Changchun Rd.) If you are looking for something cheap, there is actually an HI Youth Hostel on or close to Songjiang Rd.
For longer stays (i.e. apartments) the affordable ones are on the outskirts of Taipei. Consider Xindian, Shilin/Beitou, Nangang, etc. These places are readily connected with central Taipei by the Metro, so it shouldn't be too bad. Though I'm not too familiar with Taipei rent prices/areas, so don't quote me on this.

Short trip- stay in motels or hotels. lots of those around. book it over the net if you are worried.

1 year teaching-
its easy to find a place. get a chinese speaking/writing friend to write out 'do you have any open apartments' on a note. you probaby could ask somebody at a service desk at the airport to help you. If you are lucky you will meet a person working at 7-11 who can help you if you dont know anyone. It is highly likely you will meet someone eventually who will help you if you are in a big city like taipei.

hand the to the security guard at the bottom of whatever buildings you are looking at. Go up and look if he seems to be ok with that, if he gives you the frowny face and grunts in a bad way, probably that means no.

A lot of jobs if you are teaching out here will help you find a place. this is a good place to get your note from- ESL schools almost always have 1 or 2 people (unfortunately not the owners or managers) who speak english well enough to understand what you need and can write notes for you.

For 6 people to split the tap for short term visit. It may be good to try a variety, so that you get the real flavor of Taipei. It's an
awesome city with wide range of spending possibilities.

For longer term service apartment, look into the English newspapers China Post classified section. Perhaps, these
kind of information is more readily available.

All sites are in English. Hope this helps.

BTW, many people in Taipei particular in the eastern financial
district do speak English because they were educated abroad, otherwise, people though shy are eager to help with what they do know or practice their English. Please don't hesitate to ask in English.

Hi,

These two are good 3 star Hotels in Ximending near, shopping, food and about 3 ~ 5 mins to MRT. They have nice triple and Quad room at reasonable rates. Airport bus Freego goes direct to these Hotels as well.
