I'm trying to remember without having to reread the book. Wasn't it something like "one cannot live if the other dies"? or something along those lines?

'The one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies. .. and the Dark Lord will mark him as his equal, but he will have power the Dark Lord knows not. .. and either must die at the hand of the other for neither can live while the other survives... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will be born as the seventh month dies. . .'

What oracle? I dont remember of any oracle, the prophecy was uttered by Trelawney, and I dont remember the exact words but yes, it was something about that. Actually it had to be "one cannot live if the the other lives as well", so one of them had to be killed, one of them had to kill the other one, no one else could do so. Whether Voldemort kills Harry or Harry kills Voldemort. Now the funny part of the prophecy (and the one Voldemort didnt reach to know) was that only he, Voldemort, could mark the one who would be his rival in the future. His rival also had to be born on the end of july, so the decision was on Harry and Neville Longbottom only.
So if Voldemort would just have stay quite, and wouldnt have gone out to look for his rival, to kill him, then he wouldnt have made the prophecy true, but he didnt know, so he himself chose Harry Potter and marked him, and made him his eternal rival, 'till the end when we finally know who kills who.

Happy New Year to you!!!

No it's either Harry lives and Voldemort dies or Voldemort lives and Harry dies. One cannot live if the other lives.
