Whenever the PCMCIA wireless card is inserted, why does my laptop crash and reboot? I'm tempted to reformat the hard drive. Data backup is not an issue.

Does it boot correctly when you insert it BEFORE turning your laptop on?

If yes, then I believe you may need to increase the amount of RAM in your system. You may also want to run a virus checker, and/or a defragmentation program, and/or Adaware / spyware detection program.

When you insert a PCMCIA card it triggers a chain reaction of events. The computer sees this new hardware, identifies it as PCMCIA, and attempts to read it but it can't on it's own. It needs a driver to translate for it, so it grabs a large volume of data from your hard drive and puts it in RAM so it can talk to the PCMCIA card. If the amount of data already in RAM (needed to run the rest of the laptop), plus the driver, exceeds the amount of available RAM, the laptop crashes from bits of data fighting for position in the RAM's space.

If no, get the appropriate driver, and make sure it is compatible with your operating system.

If still no, it is possible your PCMCIA card is not compatible with your laptop, or other hardware. Take it to a place where different combinations can be tried (your laptop with another card, your card with another laptop, etc, etc)

If all else fails, then try a reformat of HDD. This should be your second last option before replacing hardware.
