diamond marks on a tape measure are usually placed at multiples of 16 inches this is for carpenters building houses because vertical wall supports commonly called studs are placed 16 inches apart. If you watch PBS shows like "This Old House" they will talk about finding 16 inch centers in walls. The diamond marks on a tape measure help them do it easier.
