I double check w/ the dress code - typically for a semi-formal women wear dresses (knee length), but if you want to go w/ the skirt and blouse look - make sure it is dressy enough.
A lot depends on where you carry your weight? An A-line skirt is universally flattering.
If you go w/ a dress, a wrap dress is always a safe bet. The tie around the waist hides any bulges you might not want to show and the skirt flaring away from the body at the knees hides a bigger butt. Plus, you can dress it up w/ a bit of jewelery for this event and wear it w/ different shoes and less jewelery for something in the future.
If you have an hourglass-shape (larger breasts, larger hips and smaller waist) - try to accentuate the waist by wearing a neat belt and making sure that your blouse and skirt show off those great curves. If you are bigger on the bottom, go for darker colors below the waist to draw everyones eyes up.
V-necks are usually flattering for people w/ average to above average weight. It brings the attention to your face and slims the neck area.
There's a website listed in the sources, it may help you fit your shape a bit better.
Definitely go w/ heels and whatever you do NO ANKLE STRAP on the heels. On petite women, it makes your legs look shorter and stumpy.
Have a blast!

It really does depend on your figure.
For a classic hourglass (wide hips, narrow waist, wide breasts), an A-line skirt can be VERY flattering.
For a boyish figure (mostly equal measurements), a skirt with a flirty cutout on the edge, or a modest slit on one side can be nice.
For a pear shape, I would suggest a knee length skirt, in a fairly busy pattern, with a plain blouse to match.
Depending on your own personal preferences, there are lots of options. :) It might be a good idea to head to a 'fancy' boutique, and seek thier advice, even if you're not planning to buy anything from them.

a pencil skirt. That is basically a skinny skirt that comes below your knees. Wear a nice shirt with it, and make sure the skirt you chose wasn't denim.

It depends on how your body is built. Are you more pear shaped or round? Do you have a definite waistline? Are your legs heavy near the ankles?
If you are willing to take some measurements or have someone else take them there are sites that will tell you what kind of clothes to wear to flatter your figure.

Get one a couple inches above the knee and try and stay away from bold patterns, they only make you look bigger. Go with black or another dark color. Black always makes you look thinner.
