You only need to be 18, have a valid ID, and credit card. Though there are some small hotels/motels that allow you to just pay cash and some don't card or nothing just as long as you pay upfront (those generally are lower scale).
I usually like to stay in a Hilton brand hotel (so they do require me to give a credit card but I haven't been asked to show ID) I guess they figured that you generally are 18 when you have a credit card.

If you look the age and have the cash or credit that's legally yours they may have a whole "Don't ask, don't tell " thing and just give you a room.
