If you're PS2 is connected through a VCR the constant changes from lighter to darker screens is because of the copyright protection. This also happens with standard DVD players that connect to a VCR instead of directly to the TV. Nearly all of the VCRs on the market have been designed to detect special copyright encoding when another video device is connected through its input jacks. This deters pirating since the recording will have the same brightness shifts, clearly identifying the tape as an illegal copy.

Most older TVs have only a coaxial cable connection, so PS2s and DVD players usually have to be connected into the audio/video (red/white/yellow) jacks on a VCRs auxiliary channels, then the VCR is connected to the TV through a coaxial cable. The only way to bypass this problem on an old TV is to buy an adapter, but to be honest with you I haven't seen one... I usually just put up with the shift in brightness until I can get a newer TV.

The new TVs usually have the standard coaxial cable connections and more than one set of audio/video jacks. A set of outputs so that you can hook the TV into a sound system, and at least one input set for VCRs, DVD players, and/or game systems. If you have a newer TV, try running your PS2 directly into the TV instead of through the VCR, that should stop the shift in brightness.

If you already have a newer TV and your PS2 is connected directly to it and not through a VCR, then I don't know what to say, because it shouldn't be doing that. It would mean either a problem with the laser (some sort of misalightment) or a problem with one of more chips on the internal circuit board that isn't processing the video signal properly, but if that were the case you'd probably have the same brightness shift when you play any games.

Best bet is that you just need to hook the PS2 directly into the TV audio/video jacks and that should fix the problem. Make sure that the set you plug into is marked "input" (the "output" set is to coonect to a sound system) and then all you have to do is change the channel on the TV to the appropriate input signal. If you can't do this because you have an old TV with only cable connections, then you have to put up with the shifting until you get a newer TV. Hope this helps.
