I was overseas just weeks before the Iraq war broke out and since was going to be there a couple months I decided to register with the American Embassy. When I called I was first put on hold and that song was played while I waited.....it almost brought tears to my eyes to know that I still had countrymen close at hand in case of need

Actually, rather sad. The Star-spangled banner is a song of war, not true pride in our country. A much better national anthem would be "America" (land of the fathers pride/ land where the pilgrims pride/ from every mountain side/ let freedom ring) or America the Beautiful. Both are singable, in great contrast to the banner, which is a nearly impossible tune to sing. they both express real pride, not military might. America and America the Beautiful both reflect true pride, and both are pure American- no old English tunes there.

Proud, brave, appreciative, to live in the greatest country this world has ever known. We are the most generous the kindest.
If anyone doubts that, read some history. No empire ever treated the world with the kindness and caring we have. All previous empires conquered the world, some destroyed civilizations that were peaceful and actually more advanced. We have given back to the world far more than we have asked in return.

Pride, an indesribable appreciation I live in the freest society ever known to man. No other nation has ever enjoyed the rights and liberties we Americans enjoy. Please don't take that for granted. I agree, I hate when people manipulate the song for self-promotion and satisfaction. Did anyone ever hear Toni Braxton sing the anthem. Absolutely horrid, a prime example of a self-promotion. She gave one of those "yeeauheyahhuyah" that singers do, you know where they don't sing actual words they just hold up a clenched fist, close their eyes, and scream jumbled words. WOOOOOOOOOOW. Horrid. It came after "the land of the free," the typical place of inserting one's own twist for personal satisfaction.

I almost always ask Myself, "I wonder how many Americans realize that the tune used in 'their' National Anthem is,if fact, an old English song which was stolen and revamped"?
Francis Scott Keys original poem was adapted so as to fit into the tune of "To Anacreon in Heaven", an old English Drinking song, written by Messrs John Stafford Smith and Ralph Tomlinson, Esq. in about 1780, and first "performed" at The Crown Anchor Tavern" in the Strand, London, England.
Quoth I the first few lines ......
To Anacreon in Heav'n where I sit in full glee,
A few sons of Harmony sent a petition;
That he their Inspire and Patron wou'd be;
When this answer arrived from the Jolly Old Grecian;
"Voice fiddle and flute,
no longer be mute,
I'll lend you my name and inspire you to boot,
And besides I'll instruct you like me, to intwine,
The Myrtle of Venus with Bacchus's vine."
There are another four stanzas of this, but I shall not force it upon You (unless You insist). And to think that people try to make fun of We Australians and "Waltzing Matilda".

Goose bumps, and an almost overwhelming sense of pride. I also have a great feeling of sadness for all those who have shed their blood for our freedom. I always say a prayer for those who have given their lives and their families, and ask the Lord to guide and protect the men and women serving our country today.

I get a sense of pride, but when I hear the Marine Corps Hym, tears come to my eyes as I think about my time in the Corps and the friends I knew who gave their all in Viet Nam.

Proud that I live in the only country where I can say whatever I feel in a forum such as this and not have to worry about stormtroopers kicking in my door.People should remember that lots of our fellow citizens died for our right to run our mouths and think what we want without fear of reprisal.
