People are trying to show off.

Although some may be sincere in their effort to answer questions.

I do not believe that giving "big explanations" has anything to do with answerers making "themselves seem intelligent."
You are saying Big Explanations=Trying to seem intelligent. There is not a direct correlation.
Perhaps Big Explanations=Trying to answer the question?

What's wrong with wanting to look smart?

Some questions merit longer answers. Some people ask for specifics. Some short answers aren't clear enough to understand.

Personally, I'd rather provide a longer, more specific answer and look intelligent (or at least offer critical thoughts) than provide answers that lok like i dun't no NEting bout my 0wn langwig.

I like to help with answers of what has worked for me, life experience in most cases. That does give some of us an advantage, not necessarily proof of a higher intelligence, more like, been there done that.

Well, it's because a few of us are intelligent and like to share it with the rest of the Yahoo Answers community, then again some of us may just be rambling to mess with people and their version of reality......
-does that answer your question?

I don't really think everyone tries to appear most intelligent, but instead state their view, then an explantion as to why they feel the way they do.

Same reason why I write a huge paragraph on exams n stuff. If i dont know the answer, i would just ramble on hoping that i would stumble upon an answer.

If one has some important references that go along with the answer, that should be ok. But if one is just going on and on without direction then I would agree with you.

If its a comlex question - it deserves an answer that recognizes that complexity...

Not a matter of 'seeming' smart - just a matter of being considerate in answering.
