I don't want to buy any software if possible but all the free stuff I found so far either didn't work or were just free trials, which also didn't work. I think it is stupid to pay 15 bucks for movies on iTunes when I already own the DVD's, so I really want to use those on my iPod.

Try Windows media player or Windows Movie-maker! One of the two should help.
Also, based on your note, it sounds like that you haven't heard or you have ignored the saying:
"You always get what you pay for"
Spend a couple of bucks and get a good program!

I think for a standard XP installation (that is, no software automatically installed by the retailer, such as dell), there is no good DVD rip software. See the source link for possible free DVD rippers.hope it helps.

its free google dvd shrink and then download it. that all it does it copy dvd from one location to another. now your dvds have copywrites on them so download the 21 day free trial of any dvd and then rip all your movies to your pc with dvd shrink

Use DVD Region+CSS Free you can get it off of limewire and it works great.
